What makes Costa Rica vacations so remarkable and awe-inspiring is the amazing diversity of Costa Rica. This diversity is not only visible in the biological variety of the country’s flora and fauna, but also in the assortment of vacation activities through which visitors can observe and interact with the natural splendor of Costa Rica.
Possessing a total national territory of just under 20,000 square miles, Costa Rica is one of the smallest countries in Latin America. Despite its diminutive size, this tropical paradise is packed with more than a dozen volcanoes, verdant jungles that span to every border, countless rivers and waterfalls, expansive mountains ranges, and over 755 miles of spectacular shoreline along two oceans.

Central Americas Hidden TreasureAlthough Costa Rica's economy depended heavily on coffee exports until just recently, tourism in Costa Rica is by far the most profitable business in Costa Rica, bringing over 1.1 billion dollars into the country. This tourist industry is only expected to increase in the coming years. Foreign visitors are primarily interested in ecotourism while visiting Costa Rica, with common travel destinations such as tropical canopy tours, and scuba diving. Discovered by the Spanish (specifically, by Christopher Columbus), Costa Rica's primary language is Spanish, but a surprisingly high number of natives also speak English fluently. The highest number of English speaking residents is on the beaches, whereas the inner areas of Costa Rica have the lowest number of English speaking residents. Although located in a tropical zone, Costa Rica has perhaps the best weather balances. Featuring an average temperature of just 73 degrees Fahrenheit, Costa Rica has perhaps the most perfect weather than anywhere else in the world. Costa Rica's flag consists of the three main colors associated with freedom across the world- red, white, and blue. Costa Rica's flag consists of two blue stripes on the top and bottom, two white stripes on the inner top and bottom, and a large red stripe in the center. The flag was adopted in 1964, although it was originally adopted in 1906. Costa Rica facts are abundant in the rainforest areas. The Costa Rican forests are home to thousands of different species, claiming 5% of the world's total plant and animal species. In addition, exotic animals ranging from poison dart frogs to crocodiles make their homes in Costa Rica's rainforests. Biodiversity is high in these rainforest areas, with over 11,000 different species of plants and over 3,000 different species of animals. Costa Rica's history as a country first began when Christopher Columbus (who named the country) landed in 1502. Christopher Columbus was on his fourth journey to America. This voyage was also his last. A shipmate noticed the extravagant natives which were paddling out to meet their ship as it arrived, and he thus called the area Costa Rica, which means "Rich Coast" in Spanish. Costa Rica, while not exactly the largest country in Internet usage, contains over 800,000 Internet users. This means that almost 1 in every 4 people in Costa Rica uses the Information Superhighway on a regular basis. |

Why make Costa Rica your retirement destination?
Revered by many as the "Switzerland of the Americas", Costa Rica is the most peaceful and politically stable of Central America's countries. Within its borders, Costa Rica can offer a visitor a lush tropical paradise, but it is the country's progressive political system and economic structure that make it a blessing for the adventurous retiree.
Costa Rica can be aptly described as a tranquil democracy. Unlike many of its neighboring countries, the nation is governed by way of a democratic system, an unwavering tradition for over 150 years. In fact, Costa Ricans are so enamored with their right to vote that election day is considered the country's most important holiday, warranting a celebratory zeal that clearly stands for much more than the election process. The country's devotion to democracy is realized through its citizens' norms and values. The amicable Ticos enjoy a free and egalitarian way of life - one that is based on a mutual respect for the authority of law, as well as one's personal liberties.
Probably
the most significant illustration of this is the fact that Costa Rica is one
of the only diplomatically neutral countries of the world. As a part of the
doctrine that was established after the first and only revolution in the country's
history, the army was disbanded and installed in its place was the Guardia
Civil, a civilian police force. For this reason, visitors to Costa Rica
will be pleasantly surprised to see it as an exception to most all other developing
nations. It is a country that does not exist as a police state, violent crime
is among the lowest in the world, and obvious signs of abject poverty do not
pepper its streets. Instead, Costa Ricans are among the highest paid in Latin
America and the government guarantees excellent working conditions. In addition,
social programs such as subsidized health care, social security, and free
education are of a higher caliber than much of the western world.
Tranquil, affluent, welcoming - Costa Rica is considered by many North Americans as the perfect home away from home. And no attribute of the country is more inviting than its accessibility to foreigners. From first-time visitors to those wishing to buy property along one of its many coastlines, Costa Rica can offer a relatively user-friendly and low hassle experience. Those that are seeking permanent residence will quickly realize that it can be done with relative ease; the government places fewer restrictions on purchasing property or starting a business than perhaps all other countries of Latin America. In fact, both can be done without being a legal resident and while holding just a tourist visa. This is truly a rarity for a country that is so desirable and attractive to the paradise-seeking retiree.
