Tenerife is one of the world’s most popular destinations with its varied scenery from barren dessert landscapes, to its endless beaches and lively resorts. The temperature is very hot throughout the year; the weather is scorching during the summer months so the best time to visit is spring or autumn when it is very pleasant.

The Island is closer to Africa than to Spain, the original inhabitants of the island were fair skinned blonde people, very few remain on the island today. These races of people are called Gaunche. Today the vast majority of the population is Spanish with 685,583 living there today.

Tenerife has the highest peak of all the mountains in Spain it is called El Teide. Visitors are able to take a cable car to the top and see the amazing views of the whole Canary Islands.

Excursions can be taken to all over the island, they can be booked from the tourist office. La Rouguna was once the capital of the island which was founded by Lugo in 1496.

Tenerife has many museums, Palacio de carte is the palace built in the 18th which is close to the Plaza de Espana. The museum military houses history about Nelson attacking the town and the castle in July 1797 where he lost his arm. The Bishops palace known as the house of Salagar dates back to the 17th century. Iglesia de San Francisco is a beautiful church built in the 18th century and is designed in the typical style of a Canary Island church. The typical churches have wooden roofs.

Tenerife like all the Canary Islands is tax free on all luxury goods, the best deals can be found on items made of lace.

Tenerife has some beautiful beaches which stretch to be miles long, most have black sand from the volcanoes. There are lidos and sun beds all along the seafront of the main town. Windsurfing and diving is also available on the main seafront of the island.

The local produce of the island is bananas, tropical fruits and wine but the tourist industry is the main money maker. Tenerife has two main airports with flights from mainland Spain and the rest of Europe.
